How a film edit works

Five stages, each ending in a review, so the big decisions happen early and picture lock is a formality.

1. Brief and quote

You send the script, footage and schedule. We watch enough to judge the work, ask questions, and send a written quote with dates for each cut and the number of notes rounds. Work starts when you accept it.

2. Assembly

Every scene in script order with the best takes. Long and loose on purpose: it shows what the film has.

3. Rough cut

The film takes shape. Scenes are trimmed, moved or dropped. This is the cut to be honest about, because changes are cheapest here.

4. Fine cut

Performances, rhythm and transitions refined. Notes become smaller: a look held longer, a line removed.

5. Picture lock and handoff

You sign off, and we prepare files for sound, color and delivery. Extra rounds beyond the quote are priced before we start them.
